Apply The Breaks
Apply The Breaks
Take 3 to 7 turntables, three mixers, 3 – 5 DJs and add a host for flavour. Now throw in some humour, a large scoop of oomph, stir vigorously, then present to a full dance floor and allow to boil for 60 – 120 minutes. What do you have? Apply the Breaks (ATB)!

Think Scratch Perverts or the former Drunken All-stars with a sense of humour and you’re about there;

Formed in May 2003, ATB consists of DJ’s Mack The Knife, C Smoove, Rob Focuz, Idle, and Daddy Fingaz, and host and K.I.D, who combine in various configurations to produce an energetic DJ show covering the full spectrum of breakbeat music. It’s certainly not a scene for the feint-hearted, and the unique live experience continues to grow as the crew approach their 5th year as residents at rave-giants Raindance as well as headline slots at various events up and down the country such as Epidemik, Waveform, Vinyl Touch etc.

Individually, the crew have their own projects, which include promoting the long-running Monday Club night at The Horn in St Albans and have held the fortnightly 4-6pm Sunday slot on underground radio station RAW FM for over 7 years. C Smoove and Daddy Fingaz also have a bi-weekly show on internet radio station iBreaks, in addition to a regular podcast available from iTunes. MC K.I.D. is well known for his ease at getting the crowd members involved in the atmosphere that leads to a top night as well as appearing on MTV Base and Channel U with Vics and Trix. Idle is well in demand for his top rate scratching skills, so much so that he spends more time in clubs than he does at home, as well as single handily keeping kettle chips and Cornish pasties alive. Check the Armitage Skanks Show every Tuesday from 7-9pm on NSB Radio to hear more of him.

The crew also produce their own tracks, the first release from Dekoy and Rob Focuz hit stores in April 2007 on Control Breaks Records. This was well received, spending the first 2 weeks of its release in the top 10 download and vinyl charts at Juno and Breakbeat Online. The follow up, Bob Hopeless came out in December on Diverted Traffic Records to more critical acclaim you can pick it up at online music store Beatport. A third release by the pair, Colonel K, is due out soon - also on Diverted Traffic.

CTRL-Z
CTRL-Z
Their DJ sets have to be seen to be believed, headlining Events all over the world, In 2007 they were one of the main drawcards in Annie Nightingales Tent on the Opening night of the infamous Glastonbury festival and became residents at the legendary End club for DJ Friction's Shogun Audio Night. Always looking to take things to the next level, Ctrl Z have started their own label 'Never Say Die Records' in 2009 as an outlet for their ever changing and uncompromising sound.

Ctrl Z are a production duo hailing from London. They are one of the hottest acts in the breakbeat world and have become pioneers and trendsetters of harder edged breakbeat. When Ctrl Z's first production was unleashed, it was snapped up by DJ Mutiny's Funkatech Recordings. 'Disko' and 'Pain' was a defining episode in break beat history as it caused a tidal wave in the Breaks scene. It blasted it's way straight to number 1 in the Mixmag charts and straight into the boxes of the Breakbeat elite. This dancefloor bomb paved the way for the duo, but was just a hint of what was to come. They have over 40 releases and remixes under their belts on respected labels such as Against the Grain, Lot49, Botchit & Scarper, Passenger, Rat Records and Hardcore Beats. It is no surprise that after only a year in the business, Ctrl Z had the honour of receiving two nominations for Best Breakthrough Act and Best Breakthrough Producer at the 2005 Breakspoll Awards. Dash & Inch continue to receive praise and support from some of the biggest players in the scene. Freq Nasty commissioned no less than three Ctrl-Z tracks for his Breakspoll compilation CD, while the Freestylers requested not only a Ctrl Z remix on their album, but a collaboration with themselves too!
